The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) of 2020 is a law passed by the state of California in the United States.

CCPA requires, among other things, that users know what personal information is being collected about them, whether the information is sold or disclosed and to whom, and the right to access their personal information.

The CCPA applies to businesses that collect personal information in California (meaning any business that has users in California whether or not the business itself is geographically located in California). Specifically, the CCPA applies if the company:

  • has an annual gross revenue in excess of $25M;
  • is in the business of buying/selling/sharing personal information of 50k or more consumers (which could also be simply website’s visitors); or
  • derives 50% or more of its annual revenue from selling consumer personal information.
