The Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing (CAN-SPAM) Act of 2003 is a United States federal law.
CAN-SPAM covers all commercial email messages in the US. It requires that businesses:
- don’t use false or misleading headers (i.e., the “From” and “To” lines);
- don’t use deceptive subject lines;
- identify the message as an ad;
- tell recipients where you are located (meaning a physical address);
- tell recipients how to opt-out of future messages;
- honour opt-out requests promptly; and
- monitor what others are doing on your behalf (in other words, you are responsible for any email marketing company you hire).
